Biography
Klemen first practiced Judo in the summer of 1986 when he started attending Elementary school. He joined a famous Judo team named Ivo Reya. His results were nothing special in the early years of his career. This only deepened his fascination of Judo.
Klemen's hard work and devotion started paying off. In 1995 he became a national champion for the first time. Three years later in 1998 he won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships. No one expected him to win this medal, he even surprised himself. This was a milestone in his Judo career, a result which motivates him even today.
His next big result was when he won the Gold at the World Cup in 2001. He was the first male to ever accomplish this as an independant Slovenian.
It was thought that Klemen would participate in the 2004 Athens Olympics but a knee injury follwed by three surgeries prevented him from qualifying for the Games. This is when he set his heart to the next Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. He started the Qualifications very successfully by 5th place at 2007 European Championships and couple of good results at World Cups, but unfortunatelly badly injured his knee again in August. He had knee reconstruction at the end of October. He stayed among 9 European judokas, qualified for the Beijing, until the end of February, when he finally had to let go Olympic Games with deep disappointment.
Over years he changed Judo clubs and coaches but never considered changing sport. The traditional Japanese martial art has become a way of his life!
He is presently living in both, Slovenia and Canada. In Canada he is training at the Shidokan Dojo under the great Nicolas Gill.
